Operation Safe Stop - Kids Safety Tips
- Have a safe place to wait for your bus, at least 5 giant steps (10 feet) away from traffic and the street.
- Never play in the roadway when waiting for your bus.
- Line up facing the school bus door, not along side the bus where the driver can not see you.
- If you have to cross the street, always cross at least 5 giant steps in front of the bus and only after the driver motions to you it is safe. Remember to always look both ways before crossing.
- Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, the doors open, and the driver says its okay before stepping on the bus.
- Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus.
- Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are supposed to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!
- If you drop something near the bus, don’t pick it up until you tell the bus driver or he may not see you.
- Never speak to strangers at the bus stop and never get into a car with a stranger.
- Tell your bus driver if a stranger tries to talk to you or pick you up.
During the school bus ride:
- Always sit fully in your seat and face forward.
- Never stand on a moving bus.
- Speak quietly so you will not distract your driver.
- Do not throw things or stick anything out the windows such as your arms, legs, heads or backpacks.
