Community Relations - Citizen Police Academy

The next Citizen Police Academy will be taking place early June to August.

What is the Citizen Police Academy?

The Citizen Police Academy is a free program that offers citizens a first hand look inside the Police Department. Participants will gain a better understanding of how police officers perform their duties and how the Department serves the community.
Citizen Police Academies across the country have resulted in increased communication, trust and support between Police Departments and the communities they serve. We hope that participants will be better informed so that they may use the information to increase their safety, heighten their awareness and become a more active member of their community.

What will be taught? Classes Include:

arrow  Each participant will have a voluntary ride along scheduled with a Duluth Police Officer.

arrow  Participants will also have the opportunity to experience Duluth’s Immersive Virtual Reality Training Simulator, a 300-degree high-definition use of force firearms training simulator system. Each participant will be put in the role of a police officer in which they will have to make split second decisions while reacting to evolving scenarios.

Who can apply?

2007 Graduating ClassTo apply for the academy you must be at least 17 years old and willing to submit to a criminal history background check prior to selection. Those under 18 will need a parental release. First preference will be given to those who either are Duluth residents or work within the city limits of Duluth
