Community Emergency Response Team

The Duluth Police CPA-CERT training course provides participants with a general working knowledge of the police department and the different divisions within the agency. Following the departmental information, participants engage in 10 weeks of training which cover the FEMA Community Emergency Response Team Course. The CPA-CERT course meets one day a week, with the initial meeting held at the Duluth Public Safety Building. The CERT classes are held at the Gwinnett County 911 Center in Lawrenceville. The Duluth CPA-CERT course is offered twice a year in partnership with Gwinnett County Emergency Management.

The CERT portion of the course provides the student with classroom materials and hands-on practical exercises. CERT topics include: Introduction to Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety, Basic First Aid, Light Search & Rescue, and an overview into Terrorism.

The course exam is a practical exercise where students put their skills and knowledge into practical application at the Gwinnett Fire Academy.

Students that complete the course are presented a FEMA backpack with CERT equipment. The Students will then be able to return to their neighborhood with the skills and knowledge to build and provide their neighborhood with CERT response capabilities.
